APP FOR YOUR APPETITE

India, being a mosaic of cultures is not only rich in languages but also in culture and food varieties. One of the most sought after and easy to make dish is idly, which is made out of rice’s batter. Its texture matters as much as its taste. Ghee spread over hot idly is easy digestible and hunger filling. Smaller sized ones called mini idly immersed in sambar or chilli powder can be consumed as a healthy snack.

Idly’s counterpart, Dosa which is made out of the same batter shares equal position with it. Its not just a simple dish but branches into varieties and can be customized according to desires. The basic dosa which is called saada dosa meaning ordinary dosa is the base idea for all other dosas. Its crisp and thin texture makes it an ideal food that is neither heavy nor light but perfect just one when you would like to have a filling but not a heavy meal. Set dosas are similar to uthapam, except for its reddish brown color and taste. 3-4 pieces of it are served in a plate along with green chutney while uthapam has onion sprinkled over it and is served with coconut chutney and sambar. Both are fluffy and round which makes it a hunger killer that lasts longer.

While South India’s common and feasible dishes are idly and Dosa, North India’s common yet indispensible meal is roti. Made out of wheat flour, it’s texture is at its best when served hot and is the best dish for diet conscious people since it contains less calories. What makes it exciting to consume is the myriad side dishes that varies from dhal to paneer. Aloo and sagu is another combo of side dish that is commonly served with roti in restaurants.
Apart from these regular dishes, North India is also famous for it’s ‘chat items’ which is a combination of snacks and fillers and makes it a wholesome food. Popular among them is the pani puri which has a stall in almost every road corner in cities. It contains a light puri which is filled with pudhina juice and aalo. The spicy light snack not only offers taste but a happiness that is known only to those who consume it. Another item that’s wholesome is paav bhaji in which the bread is toasted in butter and accompanied with potato and masala. Some common types of dishes that have similar ingredients are bhel puri, sev puri, masala puri, samosa chenna and dahi papadi chat. Although they sound similar with some common ingredients, each of them have a blissful taste and are worth trying.
